Call for Nominations: EVLT Steinberg Conservation Leadership Award

Dr. Thomas Steinberg was President Emeritus of the Eagle Valley Land Trust and ardent supporter of open space conservation. He served on the EVLT Board of Directors for over 25 years and guided the land trust as President. He was also active with the Eagle River Watershed Council. Through both organizations he oversaw the conservation of thousands of acres of land and water in our community.

Dr. Steinberg’s friends and peers say there was no one more kind, thoughtful, steadfast and tireless in conservation work for EVLT; attributes that made him a force for many great outcomes. He was deeply knowledgeable about the landscapes he wanted to protect, persistent and impressively successful. He had a special gift for bringing people with opposing views together to collaborate. He was resolute and passionate about protecting open space. He understood the appeal and solace that comes from spending time on preserved lands. Being an early leader in Vail, people listened to him and followed his example. We are all beneficiaries of his vision and hard work.

Criteria for Nominations

Dr. Steinberg was a strong leader, forward thinker and passionate about conservation. With this award, EVLT recognizes these qualities in individuals, families, and organizations that strive to further Dr. Steinberg’s vision for protecting the landscapes of our valley. Recipients of this award will have significant and lasting impacts on the conserved landscapes of the Central Rocky Mountains for future generations. This award will not be given annually and prioritizes celebrating accomplishments during award winners’ lifetimes.

Selection Criteria

Recognizing the high bar set by Dr. Steinberg’s example, winners of this award must be exceptional in conservation contributions and achievements. EVLT wants to hear from the community as to who has most impacted regional conservation in your opinion or in your corner of our county.

Who has inspired you to enjoy and protect our spectacular Valley? Who do you think leads public opinion or influences the direction of land use in your neck of our woods? Whose actions have impacted our iconic landscapes in ways that are important to you? When you think of the land around you, that you recreate on, eat from, drive by or look at, who has had the most impact in keeping them green? Is there one person, a group of people or an event that has had a lasting impact?

Submit nominations of candidates who have had a powerful impact on agricultural, historical or ecological conservation in our community through the following: Leadership, Collaboration, Initiative, Advocacy, Vision, Determination and Follow through.
