Horn Ranch I and II
Horn Ranch is one of the most visible and stunning landscapes along I-70 and the Eagle River corridor. There are two adjacent properties: Horn I (south of I-70) and Horn II (north of I-70).
This iconic piece of land is in the heart of the Red Canyon Valley, the beautiful landscape of crimson cliffs, hillsides, and meadows between Wolcott and Eagle. It features stunning access to the Eagle River and serves as a natural visual buffer between developed areas to the east and west. The Red Canyon Valley is a “Classic Colorado” landscape, and the conservation of Horn Ranch forever protects the stunning views enjoyed by tens of thousands of travelers along I-70 every day. The permanent conservation easement on the property also protects riparian habitat and provides 288 acres of public open space. Over one mile of the Eagle River is accessible for fishing and floating.
Horn Ranch is an important historical site in Eagle County. Rupert Sherwood, a local prospector from Fairplay, laid claim to the land in 1883 and started a cattle operation. From 1895 to 1915, the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad had a key stop on this land. The bridge was the major crossing point on the Eagle River between Wolcott and Eagle, and the property boasted a lumber mill and saloon. Famous stallion Sooner Leo, one of a well-known pedigree of American quarter horses, was a resident of Horn Ranch. The area was also an important stone quarry; its brownstone was used in the construction of the historic Hotel Jerome in Aspen, the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, and the 1890 Opera House in Pueblo.
