The 2026 Steinberg Conservation Leadership Award
by Bergen Tjossem

Dr. Thomas Steinberg was President Emeritus of Eagle Valley Land Trust and an ardent advocate for conservation. He served on the EVLT Board of Directors for over 25 years and was also active with the Eagle River Watershed Council (now the Eagle River Coalition). Through both organizations, he oversaw the conservation of thousands of acres of land and water in our community.
Dr. Steinberg’s friends and peers say that there was no one more thoughtful, steadfast, or passionate about conservation. He was deeply knowledgeable about local landscapes, and he had a special gift for bringing people with opposing viewpoints together. We are all beneficiaries of his vision and tireless efforts.
Award Criteria
With the Steinberg Conservation Leadership Award, EVLT recognizes strong leadership and forward thinking in individuals, families, and organizations that advance Dr. Steinberg’s vision for local land conservation. Recipients of this award will have significant and lasting impacts on the conserved landscapes of the Eagle River Valley. This award, which will not necessarily be given annually, celebrates accomplishments over the course of the award winner’s lifetime.
